Why suzuki method is bad
The very real obstacle of performance anxiety may be seeded during these early years. Fraught with minefields, playing the violin or whatever instrument is an activity that must be approached with caution. The Suzuki Method is all about teaching children in the way the naturally learn. The Mother-tongue method.
It would make sense that as Suzuki teachers and parents, we would allow our Suzuki violin students to develop and improve the same way they do when they are learning to walk and talk. That is, naturally, without pushing, prodding, and criticism. We can afford to give them time to notice and correct them themselves. And the more they do this, the better they will become at doing it, and the less they will need and depend on us to do it for them. The less they have to depend on us, the faster they can teach themselves.
But I do think that I will be striving for more balance between letting my students explore the instrument in a fun, improvisatory way and more structured, deliberate instruction. As a Suzuki violin teacher, I know firsthand that parents are often not really sure what they are getting into when they begin Suzuki lessons. I obviously am biased towards Suzuki method, but I wanted to address some of the cons you mentioned. Group Lessons. And the students love the group classes anyway. And nowadays, they can listen with headphones on a small iPod or whatever.
Are traditional teachers really not having their students play in recitals regularly? Performance is an essential aspect of music playing no matter what method you use. Rote Learning. Most teachers now introduce note reading in the first year of lessons. Not a huge deal. Practice commitment. Teachers of any sort want their students to practice.
Otherwise they make no progress. It does fall on the parent to encourage this, but you had to do that with brushing their teeth too. Parental Involvement. You gotta commit. However, there should be some element of parent involvement in any music lesson situation—your piano or violin teacher is not a babysitter, and one lesson a week and no practice the other days will not bring any improvement. It is a huge commitment as you say for parents, and the more children the more the juggle of competing priorities for practice time.
